Jackson community gets behind boy, 9, who has cancer

JACKSON — A big crowd is expected at the Elms Elementary School gymnasium Friday to watch a basketball doubleheader. Faculties from three schools in the district as well as a team of police and fire department members will be battling it out on the court.

But the star of the night will be a fourth-grade pupil of the host school.

The games are being held to benefit 9-year-old Chase Olsen, who has spent most of the school year traveling back and forth to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for intensive cancer treatments.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – On Friday night, October 2, Lori Ditzel will hold “Cocktails for a Cause” LIVESTRONG Day event at The Beach Bar in Seaside Heights, NJ. LIVESTRONG Day is the Lance Armstrong Foundation's one-day initiative to unite people affected by cancer in raising awareness of cancer issues in communities across the country. This year’s event, all money raised will be donated to The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The event will start at 5:00 p.m. at The Beach Bar, located at 28 Boardwalk Seaside Heights, NJ 08751. The event will have free admission, free food, specials on drinks, auction items, 50/50 and Door Prizes. There will be a remembrance wall to sign and honor those fighting cancer or in memory of someone you have lost to cancer and will also create a giant yellow chain around the bar. Those who attend are encouraged to make a donation to benefit the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

“Cancer has affected my family. My father, a nonsmoker, has had Non-Hodgkin lymphoma for 23 yrs and has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. It’s hard to just sit by and just watch. I felt I needed to do something. This is my something. While I couldn't take a treatment for my father or fight his disease for him I can still fight cancer by raising awareness to this terrible disease,” said Ditzel. “LIVESTRONG Day is the perfect platform to raise awareness, to show people who are fighting cancer that you care, and to fight for a change in health care.”

Dog Walk for Cancer coming to Ocean County Park Sept. 13

The 6th Annual Dog Walk for Cancer will be held at Ocean County Park on Route 88 in Lakewood on Sunday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature a gift auction, agility lessons, face painting, dog kissing booth, pet portraits, magician, animal communicator, and a Frisbee dog demonstration. Canine contests will be held for the best dressed, best trick, smallest dog, largest dog, hairiest dog, best wag and best kisser, to name a few.

This year, Elwood, winner of the 2007 World's Ugliest Dog Contest will make and appearance at the Dog Walk and will be available to serve as “best man” at the canine wedding chapel.
Scara's Italian Ice in Point Pleasant has donated an autographed baseball signed by Yankee Derek Jeter which will be raffled off at the walk.

There is a minimum donation of $15 to participate. There will be prizes and giveaways with all donations. The participant with the highest pledges will win a special prize. All proceeds benefit the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center at Community Medical Center and local therapy dog organizations that certify pet therapy dogs. Community Medical Center's oncology patients receive daily visits from trained pet therapy dogs who contribute to the healing atmosphere, ease loneliness and bolster self-esteem.

The Dog Walk is not a race, but an event to symbolize concern for the cause of cancer and the benefit of pet therapy. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

LIVESTRONG DAY 2009 PROCLAMATION - Draft 1

I just finished the first draft of the Cancer Institiute of New Jersey (CINJ) Survivor Advisory Board's LIVESTRONG DAY 2009 PROCLAMATION which we plan on submitting to Governor Corzine to make October 2, 2009 offically LIVESTRONG Day in the state of New Jersey. I used our friends from LIVESTRONG Army NH Seacoast proclamation from last years LIVESTRONG Day as our template.

On Tuesday I will attend the CINJ Survivor Advisory Board's meeting and will work with the other survivors on the Advisory Board to make enhancements with hopes of getting CINJ to back the effort and help us to get the Governor to sign the proclamation. This will not be an easy task, but we will give it all we got!

Did you know this about cancer in NJ? According to the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services, cancer is the leading cause of death in New Jersey for all age groups between ages 25 and 85. The ACS states in 2009 New Jersey will have the ninth highest overall cancer incidence rate (42,920 total) among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

We have so much to do. We have to take action now!

TOMS RIVER — Jeff Mangold's reason for riding in the 100-mile Livestrong bike challenge in Philadelphia is simple.

"Everyone knows someone who has battled cancer. The disease has touched everyone in some way," said the 46-year-old surfing and cycling enthusiast, who is a guidance counselor at Central Regional High School in Berkeley.

Mangold, in fact, has been touched more than once by the loss of a someone close from cancer.

His neighbor of eight years and friend, Jim Hyland, died from skin cancer at age 42 in August 2008, and his mother-in-law, Delores Lipay, of Manchester, died from cancer at age 65 in November.

But Mangold also is participating in remembrance of Central Regional faculty members who succumbed to the disease, including Trish Harsche, Jill Applegate, Judy Lametta and Maureen Kerr.

Imerman Angels One-on-One Cancer Support: Connecting cancer fighters, survivors & caregivers.

Imerman Angels connects a person fighting cancer today ("cancer fighter") with someone who has beaten the same type of cancer ("cancer survivor"). The relationship provides a fighter the opportunity to ask personal questions and receive encouragement from someone who is uniquely familiar with the situation. The relationship provides a survivor the opportunity to personally help a fighter as he or she battles the disease.

In addition, Imerman Angels also connects “caregivers.” A caregiver is a friend or family member who is supporting a cancer fighter. Like fighters and survivors, they wish to be paired up with another caregiver who relates to and understands their situation. For instance, we have introduced the mother of a three-year-old cancer fighter to the mother of a four-year-old cancer survivor.

Armstrong announces new team for next year's Tour de France

(APP.COM)ANNECY, FRANCE — Lance Armstrong and RadioShack are forming a new cycling team that will compete in next year's Tour de France.

The seven-time Tour winner, who returned to cycling after 3-1/2 years of retirement, also said Thursday he expects to take part in running and triathlon events for Team RadioShack beginning in 2010.

"RadioShack has agreed to partner with us on this venture and ensure that this partnership and this team stays alive for years to come, continues to be at the head of the peloton," Armstrong said in a video on his Livestrong Web site.

The 37-year-old Texan is riding this year's Tour with the Kazakh-funded Astana team. He was in third place overall after Thursday's time trial, 5 minutes and 25 seconds behind teammate Alberto Contador.

"It's a huge opportunity for us as an organization and as a cancer survivor. It's pretty mega," Armstrong added after the stage in Annecy.

In a statement released by RadioShack, Armstrong said he has had "a great season so far" but is hoping for an even better one next year.

"To be able to compete for an American team comprised of the world's top cyclists, supported by the best coaches and staff — I couldn't be happier," he said.

Armstrong did not indicate who else might join Team RadioShack, but he's expected to build a squad fully devoted to his ambitions. Armstrong has spent much of this year's race in support of Contador, who is expected to join another team next season.

"I heard that Lance was launching a new structure," Contador said. "But I just want to concentrate on winning the Tour and we will see afterwards."

Garmin-Slipstream's American manager Jonathan Vaughters, a former Armstrong teammate, said that none of his riders will join the new RadioShack team.

"All our riders but one will be under contract next year," Vaughters said. "That rider is faithful to the team."

Armstrong also did not say whether his longtime friend Johan Bruyneel, Astana's current manager, would join his new team. Bruyneel was with Armstrong for each of his Tour victories.

Armstrong said RadioShack will help his Livestrong Foundation in its fight against cancer. He said the electronics chain, with about 35,000 employees in nearly 6,000 stores, can provide the resources to field a team that can compete in the world's premier cycling race.

We have an incredible opportunity to leverage RadioShack's connection to tens of millions of people to spread the Livestrong message," Armstrong said. "Also, in cycling, the technology we use on our bikes matters — it allows us to compete at the highest level. It's important to me to partner with a brand that understands the role technology plays in people's lives."

Cycling's governing body president Pat McQuaid welcomed the creation of the new team.
"It's excellent news because it is a new American team, and it's a new sponsor coming into the sport," McQuaid said by phone. "It's definitely good for cycling and for the development of the sport in America. Look at what Armstrong has brought to the Tour de France this year. He's bringing the fame again to the sport of cycling next year, that's a good thing."

Astana has struggled with financial problems this year. In May, the International Cycling Union threatened to withdraw Astana's racing license after riders went unpaid for two months.

Armstrong is riding for free this season, but joined teammates in a protest at the Giro d'Italia when they wore jerseys with the sponsor's name faded out.

McQuaid couldn't say whether the RadioShack team would be granted the UCI Pro Tour licence, which is given to 20 teams and allows them automatic entry into the most prestigious races.

"I know that they've had their application in on time, which is last Monday," McQuaid said. "It then goes through a process of evaluation and eventually the license commission takes a decision based on a variety of criteria. I don't involve myself in all that."

RadioShack, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, said it will also sponsor the Livestrong Foundation's signature fundraiser, a 5K run/walk and cycling ride held in four cities throughout the United States.

"We know that cancer research and survivorship is near to the hearts of many of our associates and customers, and together with Lance and his foundation, we have the power to make a meaningful difference," RadioShack CEO Julian Day said.

Armstrong said other sponsors and partners will likely join his new team.

"The usual suspects will be Nike, Trek, maybe a couple others we are working on," he said.

Ocean County Cancer Coalition Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings

OCEAN COUNTY — Hundreds of Ocean County beachgoers and life¬guards will be glad that they headed for the beach when they learn how to have fun outdoors while protecting their skin and receive a free skin cancer screening on July 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Ocean County Cancer Coali¬tion (OCCC) will hold the screenings at three Ocean County beaches: Brick Beach 3, 440 Rte 35 North; Ortley Beach, 4th and Ocean Avenue; or Ship Bottom, 20th Street beach end. The rain date for the event is July 26.

OCCC "Choose Your Cover 2009" volunteer physicians, nurses and sup¬port staff from Ocean County's four medical centers, its health depart¬ments, businesses, organizations and municipalities will combine their expertise to fight skin cancer where risks are perhaps the greatest - at the beach. There a health professional will provide a free skin cancer screening exam — a simple test that can detect signs of skin cancer — pre-registration is not required.

Ocean County residents and tourists will also learn how to have fun in the sun while protecting their skin through five sun protection options: seeking shade, covering-up, putting on a hat, wearing sunglasses, and rubbing on sunscreen. Prudent avoidance of too much sunlight is fully compatible with the enjoyment of the county's beaches.

"Choose Your Cover" began in 2008 at three Ocean County beaches under the auspices of the Ocean County Cancer Coalition, which was recognized by the Centers for Disease Control for saving lives, one beach at a time because its members provided sun safety education and 541 free skin cancer screenings in Ocean County at Brick Beach 3, Ortley Beach and Ship Bottom 20th Street beach. Forty-seven of those beachgoers were referred for further screenings, eight of whom were referred with the possibility of having developed the more dangerous melanoma.

"Melanoma is a preventable cancer," stated Arnold Baskies, M.D., FACS, chair of the NJ Governor's Task Force on Cancer Prevention and Early De¬tection and Treatment, chair of the NJ Melanoma Work Group, president elect of the American Cancer Society, Eastern Division.

"Our efforts will raise public awareness and promote protection from the harmful effects of the sun." In 2009, all four New Jersey shoreline counties will implement the Ocean County model at 11 sites. Nearly 2000 people are anticipated to participate in this highly successful event on July 25, making it the largest free-stand¬ing skin cancer screening in the state. The purpose of "Choose Your Cover 2009" is to educate the public statewide about sun safety, prevention and early detection of skin cancer. OCCC, who initiated the screenings at the beach, is one of 21 county-wide coalitions created to help implement the New Jersey comprehensive cancer control plan. The plan includes many priorities, but the one OCCC chose was based on local needs and priorities. Statewide, melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers.

In Ocean County, the number of new melanoma cases each year is significantly higher than statewide and have been increasing dramatically in recent years.

Recruiting for 3 Volunteer Leadership Positions

LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County is in the process of creating our core/base team that will work as a committee to help create or short and long term "PLAN of ACTION" for 2009 and beyond. During the next few weeks/months we will be recruiting for three leadership positions for our local army.

Recruitment Leader: A recruitment leader is the lead in getting new people involved with LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County. This could include coaching group members on how to ask others to get involved, assuring local members have the materials or sign-up forms needed to recruit others and monitoring and celebrating the addition of new local members. The person will also define ways to improve our recruitment process and create relationships with other local armies to try and improve ours and their process. Requirement: Person must have passion to help us fight cancer and grow the army.

Events Leader: An events leader is the point person on identifying community events taking place in the area in which the group could participate and arranging for event logistics, such as securing materials, volunteers and registration forms. The position could also be responsible for organizing local LIVESTRONG actions, such as a Wear Yellow Day in the community. The person would work closely with the other leaders to arrange the events. Requirement: Person must have passion to help us fight cancer. Person to have experience in event planning, fundraising or other type of events.

Communications Leader: A communications leader is responsible for developing and sending communications, such as an email newsletter or regular updates, to all group members. A newsletter and other updates could include information about upcoming meetings and activities, feature local members and successes and highlight news from the LAF. The communications captain also could monitor the local press and submit articles to the local newspaper or community newsletter or coordinate letters to the editor on behalf of the local LIVESTRONG Leader. Requirement: Person must have passion to help us fight cancer. Person to have work experience in Marketing or Communications.

Event to aid sick Toms River man

TOMS RIVER: Team Tino will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday May 3rd to help a community-oriented township man suffering from a rare form of cancer, organizers said.

The event, to help raise money for the family of Tino Modugno, will be held at Toms River High School South. Modugno, a Boy Scout leader, football coach and head usher for his church, suffers from esthesioneuroblastoma.

The event will include entertainment, food and vendor tables. All donations can be sent to Paula Vincent, 1145 Sylvan Drive, Toms River, NJ 08753.

Foundation Spotlight: Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation

LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County New Jersey is proud to support the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation and their goal to ensure all men have the information they need about the disease, its symptoms and what to do about them so that more cases will be diagnosed early, and lives saved.

The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of testicular cancer and the need for regular self-examination. Our goal is to increase early detection of testicular cancer. We seek to ensure that young men are aware of the disease and have the information they need to conduct regular self-examinations, recognize possible warning signs, and seek medical help without embarrassment or fear of stigmatization.

The Foundation was established in memory of Sean Kimerling, the Emmy Award-winning anchor of CW11 sports and pre-game announcer for the New York Mets. Sean died from testicular cancer on September 9, 2003. He was only 37.

Sean fought a brief, intense battle with cancer. He was unaware of his cancer until very late, when severe back pain (a frequent symptom of later-stage testicular cancer) finally sent him to the doctor. He was a young, healthy, vibrant man, intelligent and kind, and an extremely talented sportscaster, quickly rising to the pinnacle of his field. In the starkest sense, his life was cut short in its prime.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men between the ages of 15 and 40. It also has one of the highest cure rates of all cancers, with a survival rate over 95 percent, if detected and treated early. Too often, young men, like Sean, are not aware they have TC until it has spread throughout their body, greatly complicating treatment and their chances of survival.

Lance Armstrong encourages world leaders, cancer organizations and advocates to commit to making cancer a global priority

San Diego, CA – February 22, 2009 - The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced today that the premiere LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit will take place Aug. 24-26, 2009 in Dublin, Ireland immediately following LAF founder and chairman, cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong's participation in the Tour of Ireland, Aug. 19-23. As the landmark event of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign, the Summit will make the case for acting urgently to address the global cancer burden and introduce new commitments to cancer control by bringing together world leaders, corporations, non-governmental organizations and advocates in an unprecedented show of solidarity. The announcement comes on the final day of the Amgen Tour of California, where Armstrong was competing in his second race in his return to professional cycling and against the worldwide threat of cancer.

"Unless we act on a global level, cancer will be the leading cause of death by 2010," said Armstrong. "Our goal is to be the catalyst that brings everyone together to fight cancer—from survivors, like me, to world leaders and policymakers who must commit completely to the effort to avoid a public health catastrophe. The Summit provides an invaluable opportunity to stand up for the 28 million cancer survivors worldwide and to create a unified effort to control cancer through new commitments to action."

In a separate announcement in Dublin, Ireland's Minister for Health, Mary Harney said Ireland was very pleased to welcome the Summit to Dublin in August. "Cancer Control is a top priority for the Irish Government. The themes of the Summit fit well with our new national Cancer Control Strategy and anti-tobacco initiatives we have taken, such as the ban on smoking in the workplace. We wish the Summit and the Lance Armstrong Foundation every success and we will be happy to welcome all international delegates to Ireland."

Irish Cancer Society CEO John McCormack said, "We still have a lot to do in the fight against cancer. By 2020, it is estimated there will be more than 40,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Ireland. We can and must act to reduce the rate of preventable cancer and this summit gives us the opportunity to increase cancer awareness and take actions which will save lives."

Darach McQuaid, Project Director for the Tour of Ireland, said, "The global sports icon that is Lance Armstrong last raced in Ireland in the Tour of Ireland in 1992. This August 19-23 the Tour of Ireland could not be more proud than to have Lance Armstrong riding once again on Irish roads in the lead up to his Global Cancer Summit in Dublin. The massive, positive public reaction to his comeback to the sport in Australia in January and California in February indicate that by the time Lance arrives in Ireland next August, the interest levels will be at fever pitch. I am confident that we can provide Lance with a challenging course and via our global broadcast, promote his cancer message in over 140 television markets around the world."

Already, world leaders are indicating their intent to send high-level representation and make commitments. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and former U.S. President Bill Clinton are included in the early list of leaders expressing support. The LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign made immediate progress when it launched in Australia this January with several new commitments to cancer control from the Australian government and NGOs. In addition, conversations are ongoing with the Kingdom of Jordan to announce a substantial new commitment in that country. These commitments and others will be featured at the Summit in Dublin.

"I hope a decade from now we can look back on this campaign and see that there truly is a global cancer movement – one that has adequately funded cancer research, cut the death rate to zero and maximized the amount of prevention and education and advocacy that can be done," said Clinton. "And that it has helped people to live with and overcome cancer with the support they need."

The primary purpose of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit is to bring together world leaders to secure commitments to make cancer a global priority. The secondary purpose is to build a global grassroots advocacy movement to influence global action in the fight against cancer. Participation in the Summit is by invitation only. LAF has outlined a commitment process that all world leaders and representatives from non-governmental organizations and corporations are required to complete to be eligible for invitation. A second tragedy has family in need of help. The Pitts family, who lost their father, Walter Joe Pitts, in October from liver cancer also lost mother Eileen Pitts Wednesday night. She was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in November.

Sarah Pitts, 26, said after her mother was diagnosed with cancer, they thought she was going to be OK because her treatments were going well. However, Eileen wound up getting MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus: antibiotic-resistant staph infection).

Economic Stimulus Package - What does it mean for cancer survivors?

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 included a number of items of interest to the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF):

$10 billion to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for biomedical research (including at least $1.2 billion for cancer research).
$1 billion to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for prevention and wellness programs including cancer screening and education programs.
65% federal subsidy for COBRA health insurance premiums for up to nine months for workers who lose their jobs from September 1, 2008 through December 31, 2009.
$87 billion to help states restore recent service cuts to Medicaid programs.
$19 billion for a national health information technology system to support electronic medical records in hopes of lowering medical costs and improving quality of care.

The LAF advocated in support of many of these provisions and believes that these investments have the potential to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. The LAF will continue to engage Congress and the new Administration to ensure that these funds are spent in a manner that will have the greatest possible impact.

Fundraiser to benefit J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center

TOMS RIVER — The Office Lounge and Restaurant will holding a fundraiser for the J. Phillip Citta Regional Cancer Center at Community Medical Center Wednesday, February 18th.

Half of the day's profits will go to the cancer center, said Nick Pagano, manager.

About $50,000 has been raised during the past three years of the event. The Office Lounge, near the corner of Main Street and Route 37, will be open from 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to 2 a.m. the next day.

Global HER2 Positive Breast Cancer Trial Opens in NJ

Community Medical Center: Clinical Excellence Award

TOMS RIVER: Community Medical Center is one of 270 hospitals in the country to receive a Health Grades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award, hospital staff said.

The award is based on an independent study released by HealthGrades, a health care ratings company, according to Kristine Brown, director of public relations.

Community Medical Center, an affiliate of the St. Barnabas Health Care System, is one of only two hospitals in the state and 47 in the country to receive the award for five consecutive years.

I started off by giving them an overview of me and my experience and then lead into what we (our army) is doing. They were impressed (their words, not mine) on what we are doing. I gave them what we were thinking about for a LIVESTRONG Theme with the Lakewood Blue Claws. Our ideas focused on three key parts.

Community Desk/Table: Distribute LAF informational material (Our goal is to raise awareness not funds, but if they allow us to have a jar that would be a bonus.) Rather then hand out at gates and see people throw everything out we will need a table to announce if anyone is interested (wording not important right now) to come see at this location.
LIVESTRONG Wristbands: All stadium staff wear them, maybe baseball players (if allowed) and distribute at gates to attendees.
Jumbotron: LAF videos before, during and after game (if allowed)

Our LIVESTRONG Theme Key Messages: (Note: our goal is to raise awareness not to raise funds) Raise awareness on cancer facts (via video and hand outs) Raise awareness on the LAF (via video and hand outs) Raise awareness on LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County (via video and hand outs)

I am pleased to say that both Rich and Jim liked what we are trying to do and they also asked us to consider the fundraising part, which we are opened to, but we wanted to ensure them that the goal of the day is awareness and making a difference in the lives of those who attend that day. Rich said we can do something together and we just need finalize what we will do and when.

We will have a follow up meeting with them and we are also arranging a date/time to go there and see the video's up on the jumbo-tron during the day. We need to ensure the videos are visible since they are a large part of the LIVESTRONG Theme day. I took a lot of action items to follow up on.

Armstrong is revered, feared, resented and admired. At 37, Armstrong has re-entered the present tense of his sport, whether people like it or not, citing his love for cycling and his desire to use it as the vehicle to drive a global cancer awareness campaign. His epiphany came while training for a mountain bike race in Colorado in the summer, and it seemed like a puzzling and abrupt U-turn at first. There is not a person on this earth that has better interpersonal skills then my incredible wife Kristy. She gets along with everyone and knows how to engage people on events and other opportunities to help us make a difference.

This morning Kristy called me at work very excited. She called to tell me we just made a HUGE connection with our local hospital, Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ.

She was able to speak with the head nurse and explain that we would like to help them by giving them LIVESTRONG Notebooks, wristbands, support material, etc. This would potentially mean all cancer patients and cancer support groups there will get this material. The head nurse liked the idea especially given the hard economic times we are in the hospital is forced to cut certain programs, etc. so to get FREE support material she was pleased to hear it.

Kristy explained to her that I am a cancer survivor and briefly stated a few things we are doing and she asked my wife if I did guest speaking. She would like to see if I could speak to the nursing program. She said they would have time in March for me to go speak there.

Nothing has been finalized as they will be calling us back in the next few days to work out the details, but it just goes to show you what one phone call can do to help our cause.

I can tell that LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County NJ is going to take off in 2009 and it will be my wife who helps lead the effort. Thank you Kristy for getting us this opportunity!

What is the Global Cancer Initiative?

More than 12 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer and eight million will die from the disease each year. To address this global cancer burden, the LAF will join with local partners, organizations and world leaders to achieve three major goals.

Together we will end the stigma of cancer and turn cancer victims into cancer survivors.Millions of people around the world suffer from cancer in isolation, victims not only of the disease but of social stigma. For all too many, a diagnosis of cancer can result in ostracism from colleagues, friends and even family, and cancer becomes a shameful condition that must be hidden. This stigma leads to a lack of early detection, failure to seek treatment and an increase in cancer mortality.
Together we will build an international grassroots movement that will take cancer from isolation to collaboration.Research shows increased mortality is often caused by a lack of resources and knowledge related to cancer awareness, screening, prevention, treatment and care. However, a third of cancers could be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
Together with world leaders, we will transform cancer from obscurity to priority.Cancer kills more people than malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS combined. However, many governments devote few resources to fighting cancer and collect little information about its causes and effects.

The LAF will work with world leaders to focus on developing international partnerships, cancer advocacy, research and data collection. The Foundation will kick off this effort at the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Paris at the end of the 2009 Tour de France

As a result of the LIVESTRONG Presidential Cancer Forum and the LIVESTRONG Town Hall on Cancer both U.S. presidential candidates, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama, have committed to greater funding and a renewal of the war against cancer before the election.
In May 2008, Lance Armstrong testified on Capitol Hill about the toll cancer takes on Americans. The Senate is working on legislation, the Kennedy-Hutchison Cancer Bill, that will help overhaul America's war against cancer.
In recent years, many major U.S. cities, 24 states and the District of Columbia are helping to protect citizens from the number one cause of cancer with comprehensive smoke-free policies. In 2007, the LAF supported Proposition 15, a Texas initiative to invest $3 billion in cancer research, prevention, treatment and care.

Monsignor Donovan students hold fashion show for breast cancer awareness

Toms River, November 21 -- Students at Monsignor Donovan High School will be presenting a Fashion Show on Friday, December 5 in the high school cafeteria to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer (research).

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. The event will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. Pre-event ticket purchases are $10/person; they are $12 at the door. Tickets can be reserved by contacting cancerfashionshow@gmail.com.

There will be door prizes, raffles, and refreshments. Speakers include representatives from Meridian Health and a breast cancer survivor. Fashions are being provided by The Perfect Dress in Toms River.

All proceeds from the evening's events will be donated to the American Cancer Society towards breast cancer research.

Monsignor Donovan High School is Ocean County's Catholic high school and is located at 711 Hooper Avenue in Toms River.

A wine reception will be held at the Downtown Dinner Club on Irons Street on Sunday, November 23, 2008 from 3 to 7 p.m. to benefit lifetime Toms River resident Chris DiPietro who has tongue cancer.

Chris is only 24 years of age and a lifelong resident of Toms River. He has played soccer for the TR Soccer Association, Youth Soccer, Intermediate West and Toms River North High School.A 2002 graduate of Toms River North he attended Towson and Stockton College. He is a communicant of Saint Joseph's church.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 732-477-4556 or at the door. All proceeds will go towards the mounting medical bills.

Brian Dowd, LIVESTRONG Army Ocean County NJ Local Leader, has been an avid supporter of the LAF since being diagnosed with testicular cancer on June 2, 2006. He is a cancer survivor, husband to Kristy, father to Caroline and Annabelle.

Brian is a two time (2006 & 2008) LIVESTRONG Summit delegate from New Jersey. In 2008, he served as a LIVESTRONG Summit Steering Committee member for the Lance Armstrong Foundation which he helped with reviewing applications, advising on selecting the delegates, outreach program and volunteering at the LIVESTRONG Summit.

In February 2007 Brian founded Team Down One (http://teamdownone.com/) The mission of Team Down One is to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) supporting critical programs for cancer research, prevention, survivorship, clinical trials and one day a cure. Team Down One has raised over $44,000 for the LAF.

In 2007 & 2008 Brian has been invited as a guest of the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s to attend the Ride for the Roses weekend in Austin, TX as one of the top fundraisers in the country for the LIVESTRONG Challenge series.

In August 2008 Brian became LIVESTRONG Army Leader for Ocean County New Jersey. He also blogs (Cancer Advocacy) and guest speaks to help raise awareness on cancer and the LAF.

CANCER FACTS

Cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death worldwide in the year 2010.
This year alone, nearly 8 million people will die of cancer worldwide. Deaths due to cancer out number those caused by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.
Millions more will suffer in isolation, victims not only of the disease but of social stigma—hiding their diagnosis, isolated by their communities, pushed out of family and social circles, reluctant to seek treatment and facing a lonely and painful fight for their lives.
Sixty percent of all cancer is preventable. One-third can be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
By 2030, there could be 27 million incident cases of cancer, 17 million cancer deaths annually and 75 million persons alive with cancer within five years of diagnosis.
The burden of cancer doubled globally between 1975 and 2000. It is estimated that it will double again by 2020 and nearly triple by 2030.

Anyone anywhere can be part of our LIVESTRONG Army by joining us in our efforts to support the needs of people affected by cancer. Cancer remains the number one killer of Americans under 85. That’s why we’re growing the LIVESTRONG Army to make cancer a national priority. The LIVESTRONG Army is an opportunity for anyone, anywhere to unite with the LAF to fight cancer.

LIVESTRONG ARMY Ocean County NJ is a group of people committed to making cancer a local and national priority. We will raise awareness in our local communities; work on projects to address cancer specific concerns, raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and other great cancer organizations.

We are starting the recruiting for the BASE members. We will build our local army starting with BASE members (core members) who will lead the effort and then we can go out a recruit team members that will help us grow and make a difference. Once we have a BASE team we will then start recruiting for LIVESTRONG Army members which will help us accomplish our goals.

scratch: At the fence around the site of the Lance Armstrong Foundation building currently under construction, large concrete rectangles are stacked like dominoes next to tidy piles of long wooden beams.
If you look closely at the designer's rendering for the $9.5 million project at 2201 E. Sixth St. you can see those concrete slabs, carefully removed from what was once a warehouse floor, serving as outdoor paving blocks. The long wooden planks will be reused. In all, more than 75 percent of the materials taken out of the building will be re-employed and at least half of what cannot be used will be recycled and salvaged."
